You must 16 years of age or older.

Do I need an appointment to take the Learner's Permit test?

Permit test are given at full service branches of the RMV on a walk in basis Monday through Friday.

What do I need to bring with me to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to get a learner’s permit?

You must bring your original birth certificate, social security card, completed learner’s permit application; signed by a parent or guardian if you are under 18 and $30 for the written test fee.

What is observation?
 
Observation is when a student sits in the back seat of the car during a driving lesson and observes another student driving.

 
 
How does a student schedule driving lessons?
 


To schedule driving lesson, you may call our office Monday through Friday 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.

How long is a driving lesson?
 
Each driving lesson runs for 1.5 to 2 hours, with the student driving for one hour.

 
 

How many students are in the car during a driving lesson?

There are typically 2 or 3 students in the vehicle during a driving lesson.

 
 
 
Where are students picked up for driving lessons?
 
Students are picked up by an instructor at home, school, work etc. Pick-up site should be designated at the time the lesson is booked.

 
 

 

How long to I have to complete the drivers education program?
 


The driver program must be completed within 2 years.

How does a student obtain a driver’s education certificate?
 
A student will receive a driver’s education certificate, issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles once the state requirements consisting of 30 hours classroom, 12 hours behind the wheel instruction, and 6 hours observation have been successfully completed.

 
 

What if I miss a class? Can classes be made up?
 
Any missed class must be made up. Students must make up the same class that was missed.

 
 
Can a student use a NR Driving School vehicle for a road test?
 
Yes, a student does have the option of using one of our vehicles (Monday through Friday) for a road test. However, there is an additional fee for this service. Please refer to our fees section.

 
 
 

I have an international driver’s license. Do I need to get a Massachusetts learners permit?
 
Yes.

 
 
Do you have Registry of Motor Vehicles Drivers Manuals available for students?
 
We do not provide drivers ed manuals. Students may obtain a manual at any Registry of Motor Vehicles.
